GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Sophomore Brent Opdyke's pinch-hit, two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth lifted Biola to a 3-1 win in the first game and The Master's won a 13-innings marathon 2-1 in the second in a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday at Eagles Diamond.
The Eagles move to 4-9 on the season and 2-3 in GSAC play while The Mustangs finish the day at 14-4 and 4-2 in the conference.
Both games were outstanding displays of pitching by both sides. In game one Biola starter Brian Albert and Concordia starter Tim Woodward put on pitching clinics.
Woodward did not allow a hit through the first six innings of the game as just two Eagles reached base. Albert nearly matched him, surrendering just two hits through the first five.
The Master's scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning. Pete Goeman led off with a single, stole second, reached third on an infield out and scored on a ground out to first by Joe Zeller.
Woodward continued his strong play despite allowing his first two hits in the seventh inning. However, he ran out of gas in the eighth as the Eagles tagged him for three runs.
Senior catcher Taylor Loop led off the inning with a double to right and Chad Pace was hit by a pitch one out later to put two on base. Opdyke was then called on to pinch hit and drilled a triple down the rightfield line to drive in the first two runs for Biola. Steven Alexander would then re-enter the game for Opdyke and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Foreman to make it a 3-1 game.
Junior Billy Vopinek came on and pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his second save of the season, giving Albert his first win in three decisions.
In the second game, Biola starting pitcher Calen Pennington got off to a wild start and the Mustangs were quick to take advantage. Pennington walked a batter to lead off the game and allowed a single to Michael Bando with Goeman reaching third on a Biola error. Pennington then allowed the first run of the game on a wild pitch and walked another batter before settling down, recording a pair of strikeouts and ending the threat with a pop out.
Pennington allowed the first two batters to reach in the top of the fifth inning of a 1-0 game, but Charlie Gausepohl got a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to end the threat.
Biola then tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a bit of small ball. David West led off the inning with a single, stole second and was sacrificed to third. The Eagles then tied the game on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Brent Chavez.
The Master's had a chance to take the lead in the top of the eighth inning loading the bases with two out, but Vopinek shut the door with a big strike out of Eric Blackwell.
Both teams had some good chances as the game began to stretch into the 10th and 11th innings. Finally, The Master's broke through with a run in the top of the 13th inning. Ben Ives led off the frame with a bunt single and was moved to second on an infield out. Dustin Jones then drove him in with a single up the middle to score the Mustangs' first run in 12 innings.
The Eagles got the leadoff man on in the bottom of the 13th as Chris Foreman led things off with a single. After being sacrificed to second, Biola's No. 3 and No. 4 hitters were unable to drive him in as The Master's held on for the win.
The Eagles had just seven hits in the second game with Nick Rotkowitz recording four in six at-bats and Foreman adding a pair, also in six at-bats.
The game was the longest for Biola since the 2007 season when Vanguard defeated the Eagles 4-3 in 13 innings in the first game of a doubleheader.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 24), hosting the University of La Verne in a non-conference game on Eagles Diamond at 2:00 p.m.
