BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Freshman Vinnie Fayard cleared the bases with a double in the sixth leading Biola to a 5-3 non-conference win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday afternoon on Eagles Diamond.

The Eagles pick up their second-straight victory and improve to 2-5 on the season. The Toros fall to 4-5 overall with the loss.

Biola received a strong starting performance from another freshman, Nate Coronado, who scattered four hits and allowed two runs--one earned--to pick up his first collegiate win in his first collegiate start.

The game was an impressive pitcher's duel through the first four innings as each team was only able to muster a pair of hits.

In the top of the fifth, the Toros broke the ice with an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Leyva.

The lead was short-lived, though, as the Eagles answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Biola tied the game with a leadoff home run by Hawkins Gebbers, his second of the year, and took the lead on an RBI-double off the bat of senior Taylor Loop.

Cal State Dominguez Hills would answer back with a leadoff home run by Jon Alia to tie the score at 2-2.

But the Eagles would answer back again with a three-spot in the sixth to blow the game open. Biola loaded the bases thanks to three-straight walks with two outs. Fayard then made them pay with a bases-clearing double down the left field line.

The Toros got a run back on an RBI, pinch-hit single off the bat of Brandon Hayes in the seventh inning, but the Biola bullpen closed the door after that.

Junior Steven Alexander pitched a perfect 1-1/3 innings of relief, entering the game after Hayes' single. Junior closer Billy Vopinek allowed a two-out single in the ninth but still picked up the save--his second of the season.

Loop finished the game with two hits in three at-bats, driving in a run as the only Biola player to pick up a pair of hits.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday (Feb. 14), traveling to San Diego to take on Point Loma Nazarene University in a GSAC doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
