Eagles Rebound with 77-53 Win Over Cal State San Bernardino

Barclay scores 16 to lead four Eagles in double-figures

LA JOLLA, Calif. --- Biola shot better than 50 percent from the floor and cruised to a convincing 77-53 victory over NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino on the final day of the UC San Diego Women's Basketball Classic on Saturday night at the RIMAC Arena.

The Eagles improve to 4-5 on the season after splitting a pair of games at the tournament. The loss is just the second of the season by Cal State San Bernardino, which falls to 4-2 after also splitting two tournament contests.

Junior center Christina Barclay scored 16 points to lead four Biola players in double figures. She recorded her first double-double of the season, adding 12 rebounds to go along with five assists and three blocks.

Junior forward Jessilyn Conicelli rebounded from a tough game last night, also notching a double-double--her third of the season. Conicelli scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, adding 14 rebounds to go along with two assists, a block and a steal.

Sophomore guard Charrise Reece scored 11 points and dished out five assists and junior guard Jennifer French added 10 points for Biola.

Biola converted 29-of-56 shots from the field--51.8%--while limiting San Bernardino to just 30% shooting (19-of-63). The real story was the Eagles' dominance inside as Biola out-rebounded San Bernardino 54-21 and held a 38-6 edge in points in the paint.

The Eagles were in control from the opening tip, scoring the first nine points of the game and taking a 14-6 lead on a triple from senior guard Elise Paty with 9:32 left in the opening half. An 8-0 spurt gave Biola a 35-14 advantage with under a minute left in the period and the Eagles would carry a 20-point (37-17) cushion into the locker room at the break.

Biola led by as many as 28 in the second half at 48-20 with 14:26 left and the Coyotes could get no closer than 16 the rest of the way.

Guard Krystal Urzua led all scores with 22 points for Cal State San Bernardino. All seven of Urzua's makes came from the three-point line as she finished 7-of-13 from beyond the arc and 7-for-15 for the game. No other Coyote scored more than nine points.

Biola returns to action after time off for Christmas Break. The Eagles host the 2009 Guesthouse Inn/Biola Winter Classic on December 29-30. The tournament pits a pair of GSAC teams--Biola and Hope International University--against a pair of teams from the Dakota Athletic Conference: South Dakota School of Mines and Black Hills State University (S.D.). The Eagles play SD Mines on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and host Black Hills State on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
