BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior guard Danny Campbell connected on five three-pointers for the second-straight game, finishing with a team-high 17 points to lead Biola to a 79-58 win over Bethany University (Calif.) in a non-conference game on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles improve to 11-0 on the season with the win, the sixth-best start in the program's history. The Bruins fall to 1-11.

Campbell hit 6-of-10 shots overall from the field including going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc to finish with 17 points. On Thursday, the senior was also 5-of-9 from three-point range and led all scorers with 24 points. He was one of four Biola players in double-figures as junior guard Nate Rakestraw and junior forward Josh Miller each scored 13 points.

Senior forward Rocky Hampton picked up his fourth double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and hauling down 14 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. He also had four blocks, two assist and a steal in 32 minutes.

The Eagles shot better than 50 percent from the field for the fifth time this season and second time in as many games, hitting 29-of-56 shots for a 51.8 percent night. Biola's defense again held strong, limiting Bethany to just 38.1 percent shooting (24-of-63). The Eagles, who ranked second in the NAIA in scoring defense, held the Bruins to just 58 points, just a fraction of a point above their 57.4 ppg average allowed.

Biola got off to a big start, opening up a 13-4 lead through the first six minutes as four different players scored. The Eagles would lead by 11 at 16-5 on a three-pointer by Rakestraw with 12:38 left in the half before Bethany mounted a run. The Bruins began using a tough, pressure defense which led to a 10-2 run over the next three minutes as they made it an 18-15 game at the 9:37 mark.

Biola responded with a run of their own, using an 11-2 run capped by a pair of three-pointers by Campbell to go up 29-17. Marlon King would give the Eagles their largest lead of the half on a layup with a minute to go as the Eagles headed to the half up 35-22.

In the second, the two teams came out exchanging shots and Bethany cut the lead back to 12 on three free throws by Jason Maples at the 17:15 mark. However, the Bruins would not score for the next six minutes as Biola stretched the lead to 20 at 51-31. Bethany would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way.

Guard Jason Maples led all scorers with 19 points, adding two assists, two rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot in the losing effort. Micah Jones added 13 points off the bench for the Bruins.

Biola has had just five seasons start better than the 2009-10 season has thus far. The most recent came in 2001-02 when the Eagles opened 20-0. That was a year after Biola began the 2000-01 season with a 12-0 record. The longest win-streak to open a season came in 1981-82 when the Eagles went 39-0 before falling in the NAIA Championship game.

Biola returns to action after Christmas Break, hosting the University of Calgary (Alberta) in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 5:30 p.m. The game will be sandwiched between a pair of women's games which are a part of the 2009 Guesthouse Inn/Biola Winter Classic.
