LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior guard Marlon King scored 18 points and added four assists and three steals as Biola pulled off its second-straight home win over a ranked team, knocking off No. 15 California Baptist University on 67-64 Saturday night in a GSAC game at Chase Gymnasium.
Cheered on by a raucous crowd of 1,126 fans, the Eagles' victory gives them back-to-back wins in the GSAC for the first time all year. Biola is now 14-5 on the season and 5-4 in GSAC play, moving into a five-way tie for third place in the conference with one game to go before the half-way point. Cal Baptist falls to 14-4 overall and are also in that five-way tie with a 5-4 record.
King fell just one point shy of his season-high, but finished 8-of-12 from the field and paced the Eagles with 18 points. His driving layup with 1:34 broke a 62-62 tie and gave Biola its final lead of the game. Junior guard Rocky Hampton scored 14 points—all in the second half—and hit a put-back with 22 seconds to play to give Biola 66-62 lead.
The game proved to be a thriller with 12 ties and 11 lead changes—most of which came in the back-and forth second half. With 8:38 to play in the game, Hampton hit a jumper in the paint gave Biola a five-point advantage at 50-45. Just under one minute later, the Lancers had tied the score on a jumper by Omar Krayem and a three-pointer by Dave Cernin.
The teams then battled each other down the stretch with neither team taking a lead of more than three points until the final minute. With the score tied at 60 with under three minutes to play, Hampton nearly brought the the house down with a monster dunk, to give the Eagles a two-point edge with 2:25 to go. However, Cal Baptist quickly responded as Davey Hopkins hit a jumper in the lane to tie the score just 18 seconds later.
But King and the Eagles again milked the clock and the junior knifed through the lane and hit an off-balance runner to put Biola back on top. Cal Baptist came back down on the next possession, but Hopkins was called for a traveling violation, which gave the ball back to the Eagles. Once again, Biola went to work on the clock and Nate Rakestraw fired up a shot as time expired. The shot rattled off, but Hampton was right there to tip it back in to put Biola up by four with 22 seconds left.
Krayem then took the inbounds pass coast-to-coast and quickly got a layup to make it a two point game with 17 seconds left. Cal Baptist, which had committed just three fouls in the half, quickly recorded four in just three seconds to put Danny Campbell at the line for a one-and-one with 13 seconds to play. He converted the first but missed the second, leaving the door open for the Lancers. But Mark Roussin's three-point attempt with four seconds to play rattled off and Biola secured the rebound and ran out the clock.
Campbell finished the game 10 points, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc for Biola. Junior guard Derrick Sumpter scored 10 points and added three assists, helping the Eagles jumper out to a quick lead in the second half.
Krayem finished the game with 20 points and four assists to lead Cal Baptist with Roussin adding 18 points.
The Eagles picked up their second-straight home win over a ranked opponent. Biola knocked off #14 Westmont 59-50 last week and have now won seven of its last nine games overall.
The Eagles close out the first half of the conference schedule on Tuesday (Jan. 27), traveling to Hope International for a GSAC game at 7:30 p.m.
