EL CAJON, Calif. --- Josh Miller's four free throws in the final 30 seconds snapped a late tie and gave Biola a much-needed 56-50 win at San Diego Christian College in a GSAC game Saturday night at the Ryan Athletic Center.
The Eagles improve to 11-4 on the season and to 2-3 in the GSAC. The Hawks fall to 6-8 and 1-4 in conference play.
Biola pulled out the impressive win despite trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half. But the Eagles used a big second half and took back the lead late in the game. The two teams battled back and forth for the final few minutes and were knotted at 50-50 after a three-pointer by Kevin Dillion with 1:03 left.
After working the clock down to under 30 seconds, Marlon King took an off-balance runner in the lane that rattled off. However, Miller pulled down an impressive rebound between three Hawk defenders and was fouled on the putback attempt. He converted both free throws to give the Eagles a 52-50 lead.
San Diego Christian had one last chance but a long three-point shot by Danny Soliman missed wide and Miller pulled down another big rebound with under five seconds to play. After being fouled, he converted both free throws and put the game out of reach.
The Eagles had a tough time in the first half, shooting just 33 percent to the Hawks' 52 percent, falling behind by eight at intermission. San Diego Christian stretched the lead to 10 to start the second half, but Biola slowly closed the gap over the next 11 minutes. The Eagles were able to take back the lead at 41-40 on a jumper with 9:16 to play. Neither team was able to gain a lead larger than three the rest of the way leading the exciting finish.
Biola played impressive defense in the game, which kept the score close despite the Eagles pour shooting. San Diego Christian committed 20 errors leading to 23 points by Biola while the Eagles committed just nine.
Junior forward Danny Campbell scored 11 points to lead the Eagles while Miller and Hampton scored 10 each. Sophomore Nate Rakestraw added eight points with four assists and six rebounds.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Jan. 13), hosting GSAC foe Westmont College at 7:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
