Hampton Helps Biola Cage Sagehens

Junior scores 17 and adds 13 rebounds

Rocky Hampton scored 17 points and added 13 rebounds to pace Biola

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Junior Rocky Hampton scored 17 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and had three blocked shots to lead Biola to a 67-56 non-conference win over NCAA Division III Pomona-Pitzer College on Monday night in Claremont.

The Eagles improve to 5-1 on the season with their second-straight win while dropping the Sagehens to 2-4 overall.

Hampton continued his strong play as of late, hitting 8-of-10 from the field for 17 points and had a game-high 13 rebounds. He also recorded Biola's lone three blocks. Sophomore Josh Miller added 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, adding five rebounds and recording three assists.

The Eagles got off to a strong start in the first half, breaking a 5-5 tie with a 24-6 run to go up 29-11 with four minutes to go in the half. The Sagehens closed the gap a bit to 13 at the half, trailing just 39-26 at the break.

After Pomona-Pitzer closed the gap to 10 with a three-pointer to start the second half, Biola quickly scored the next seven points to go back up to 17 points at 46-29. The Eagles would lead by as many as 21 in the first half before emptying the bench and settling for the 11-point victory.

Sophomore Elliott Tan came off the bench to score 10 points for the Eagles, hitting a pair of three-pointers and adding a pair of assists. Junior Derick Sumpter hit three from beyond the arc to add nine points for the Eagles.

Biola returns to action on Wednesday (Dec. 10), hosting NCAA Division II Cal State Los Angeles in a non-conference game at Chase Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
