Biola Crushes NCAA DII Cal State LA, 74-49

Campbell scores team-high 19 points to lead Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Strong team defense and impressive shooting helped Biola to a 74-49 win over NCAA Division II Cal State LA in a non-conference game on Wednesday night at Chase Gymnasium.

Junior Danny Campbell led the Eagles (6-1) with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field which included three three-pointers. He also added three steals and two assists in the winning effort. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-4 with the loss.

Biola had a breakout shooting night, hitting 54 percent (27-of-50) from the field including 53 percent (8-of-15) from beyond the arc. On the defensive end, the Eagles forced 16 turnovers and held Cal State LA to just 37 percent shooting from the field.

Biola got off to a strong start in the game, jumping out to a quick 13-1 lead over the course of the first five minutes. The Golden Eagles finally hit their first field goal of the game at the 13:59 mark as Chris Mark hit a jumper in the lane. That would spark a short run by Cal State LA as the visitors pulled within five at 13-8. Biola began to pull away at the end of the half. Leading 24-15 with 4:14 to play, Biola closed out the half on a 10-4 run to take a 34-19 lead to the locker room.

The second half was more of the same as Biola continued to fire away and stretch the lead. The Eagles would lead by as many as 27 in the game before wrapping up the contest with the 74-49 win. 

Biola had four players score in double-figures led by Campbell's 19. Sophomore Josh Miller scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, adding four rebounds and an assist while junior guard Marlon King contributed 14 points. Junior forward Rocky Hampton had 12 points and added a game-high 13 rebounds to round out the Eagles in double-figures.

Mark led the Golden Eagles with 18 points off the bench while Christofer Hart added 10 points.

The game marked the highest shooting percentage of the year for Biola but the second straight game the Eagles have shot over 50 percent. 

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 13), traveling to San Diego to face Point Loma Nazarene in a GSAC game at 7:30 p.m.
