Buffum, Mitchell Lead Biola to Sweep of The Masters

Jessica Buffum had 14 kills and no errors to lead Biola

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Juniors Jessica Buffum and Kelsey Mitchell had 14 and 13 kills, respectively, as Biola swept The Master's 30-23, 30-26, 30-22 on Saturday afternoon at Chase Gymnasium.

The win moves the Eagles to 14-2 on the season and 6-2 in GSAC play while the Mustangs fall to 8-9 and 2-6 in conference.

Buffum had the best hitting performance of the season for Biola, recording 14 kills in 26 attacks without committing an error. Mitchell's match was just as good as she had 13 kills in 25 attacks while committing just one error.

Biola was able to pull away late in game one after the teams battled back and forth to start the match. Leading 17-16, the Eagles went on a 7-2 run and closed out the match scoring four of the final five points.

Game two looked like it would be a blowout as Biola led 23-11 near the midway point. However, the Master's made a furious comeback and pulled to within two at 27-25. But the Mustangs ran out of time as the Eagles were able to score three of the next four points to hang on for the win.

In game three, Biola jumped out to a 12-5 lead and managed to trade points with the Mustangs throughout the rest of the game to earn the sweep.

Sophomore Kristen Peterson recorded nine kills and had three blocks for the Eagles.

Senior Brittany Wing added seven kills and three blocks. She now has 999 kills in her four years career and needs just one more to become the seventh member of Biola's 1,000 kill club.

The Master's was led by the 12 kills of Rachel Roleder and the 10 kills from her sister Amanda Roleder.

Biola's next match should be a great one as the Eagles host arch-rival and No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific on Tuesday (Oct. 2) at 7:00 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium.
