LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior Kelsey Mitchell had a match-high 12 kills but it was not enough as No. 3 Concordia University pulled off a 30-25, 30-18, 30-22 sweep over No. 5 Biola University in a Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.
It was the first loss of the season for No. 5 Biola, which falls to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in GSAC play. Concordia improves to 13-1 on the year and 5-1 in conference.
Concordia seemed to quickly figure out the Biola defense and posted an impressive .369 attack percentage while Biola hit a season-low .164 in the match.
CUI received 11 kills each from Traci Weamer and Amber Ridens while Ashley Robbins and Stephanie Steele added nine apiece.
Biola and Concordia battle back and forth in game one with an attack error by Concordia allowing Biola to tie the score at 20-20. But Robbins recorded three straight kills followed by one by Ridens as Concordia broke open the game and cruised to the win.
In game two, Concordia jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back. The final game was dominated by Concordia which went on a 14-1 run early and held off a late rally by Biola to win the match.
Sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Christoferson and junior outside hitter Maggie McGill each had nine kills for Biola, with Christoferson hitting an impressive .471 hitting percentage.
Biola travels north to face No. 1 Fresno Pacific University on Tuesday (Sept. 25) at 7:00 p.m.
