Gamal Smalley joins Biola in the 2021-22 campaign to assist on Alan Nakamura's staff.

Smalley brings a wealth of leadership experience to BU, most recently working for the Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services organization. Smalley played a crucial role in cultivating hope and resilience to enrich the well-being of children, adults, families and communities.

Pasedena City College utilized his basketball knowledge and relational skills as an Assistant Coach for four seasons. Smalley helped the program notch its best overall record in a season in over 20 years.

Smalley had a huge impact at John Muir High School, leading the team to back-to-back playoff appearances. Immediately after assuming the head coach position, Smalley turned around the program, scoring 10, 18 and 24 wins in his first three seasons with the Mustangs.

He also spent six years at Maranatha High School as an assistant coach for the boy’s program and as a head coach for the girl’s team. Smalley helped the girl’s squad to its first ever CIF State Playoff game within his first three seasons at the helm.

Smalley boasts a diverse education background, holding a Bachelor's of Science degree in applied business management and a Master of Arts degree in organizational management from Azusa Pacific University. He also completed a doctoral program from Argosy University and is currently attending Indiana Wesleyan University Doctorate Degree Completion Program.
