His term as the head coach began with back-to-back record-breaking seasons as he led the program to a new single-season best in victories in both 2015 and 2016. His 2016 team finished the year with a .500 mark in the regular season (11-11) for the first time in the modern era of Biola Men's Tennis. They made it into the second round of the GSAC Tournament before suffering a loss to former GSAC Tournament Champion, Westmont.
Worthington guided two of his players to all-conference recognition for their performance during the 2016 season. Lucas Lee earned his second all-conference honor and sophomore Philip Westwood attained his first.
In 2015 his very young team compiled an overall record of 10-14. David Garcia and Westwood, both freshmen at the time, combined for a 27-20 overall singles record as the culture of this men's tennis team began to shift.
Worthington is currently a student at the Talbot School of Theology at Biola University. He is in the midst of studies to attain his Master of Divinity, which will tack on to the Bachelor of Arts in Biblical/Theological Studies he attained in Spring of 2012.
This is Worthington’s first head coaching job, but he comes into the position with seven years of playing experience and a year of coaching and mentoring under his belt.
In his time as assistant coach, he split duties with Goodman and invested in Biola’s student-athletes on the court during matches and on the court during practices. He and Goodman would split responsibilities so each student-athlete would get personal attention from a coach. This approach worked well, as the 2014 season was the winningest in recent program history.
Worthington donned the red, white and black for four years following a playing career at Los Alamitos High School. Doubles play was where Worthington excelled on the court. He spent three of his four seasons with the Eagles playing out of the No. 1 doubles slot, and he compiled 20 wins with his various partners. His most memorable moment on the court for Biola was making it to the men’s doubles Quarterfinals at the 112
th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament in 2012.
Worthington is a Los Alamitos, Calif. native and has two brothers and one sister. He and his wife, Sara, a UCI graduate, reside in Biola’s off-campus apartments, where he also works as a resident coordinator.
