TOURNAMENT GAME RECAPS
GAME ONE - MIDLAND UNIVERSITY 84, LA SIERRA 71 - BOX SCORE
Midland University opened the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic with a hard-fought 84-71 victory over La Sierra University on Tuesday in a game played at Darling Pavilion on the campus of Hope International University. Olivia Miller and Morgan Smeal each recorded 19 points to pace the Warriors (7-8), who led by as many as 25 in the contest. Stephanie Bryant also had 19 points to lead the Golden Eagles (5-13).
The game started off tight until Midland used a 17-7 run to open up a 12-point lead at 30-18 midway through the first half. After La Sierra pulled back to within eight, the Warriors pulled away again and took a 16-point advantage into the half. Midland continued to pull away in the beginning of the second, eventually taking a 25-point lead four minutes in. The Golden Eagles would use a very late run to make the final deficit 13.
GAME TWO - THE MASTER'S 54, WILLIAM JESSUP 49 - BOX SCORE
The Master's College scored 11 of the final 14 points in the game to pull out a 54-49 win over a surprisingly tough William Jessup University team in the second game of the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic. Theresa Brown led three Mustang (9-2) players in double-figures with 13 points while Lena Rivera and Erica Inge added 10 points each.
The Warriors (1-13) took an eight-point lead at 29-21 with just under 16 minutes to go in the game only to see The Master's respond with a long 15-0 run to go up by seven with 9:35 to go. The score was close the rest of the way, though and Rachelle Russell scored three of her game-high 15 to tie the score at 49-49 with 1:05 to go. But the Mustangs would answer with a clutch three-pointer by Inge with 46 seconds left to go up for good.
GAME THREE - VALLEY CITY STATE 79, HOLY NAMES 55 - BOX SCORE
Kristen Bearstail scored a game-high 20 points and Mandi Bindas and Caitlyn Wojahn each added 16 to lead Valley City State (N.D.) to a 79-55 victory over Holy Names University in the third game of the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic on Tuesday night. The Vikings improve to 9-4 on the season and dropped the Hawks to 4-11 overall.
Valley City State used a big first half to roll to the victory, opening up a 19-6 lead and leading by as many as 24 in the opening 20 minutes. The Hawks would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way as the Vikings easily picked up the win. Three different players recorded eight points to pace the Hawks.
GAME FOUR - LEWIS-CLARK STATE 72, AZUSA PACIFIC 62 - BOX SCORE
Jasmine Stohr scored 19 points to lead Lewis-Clark State University to a 72-62 victory over Azusa Pacific University in a battle of NAIA Top 10 teams on Tuesday at the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic. The Warriors (12-1), ranked No. 3 in the latest NAIA Division I national rankings, used an 11-0 run near the end of the first half to take a commanding 12-point lead, breaking open what had been a close game to that point.
The Cougars (9-3), ranked No. 8 in the NAIA rankings, were not able to get the score to within single-digits in the second half, despite closing the gap late. APU was led by Brianna Hall and Eboni Sadler, who each had 16 points.
GAME FIVE - HOPE INTERNATIONAL 104, PACIFIC UNION 46 - BOX SCORE
Hope International had five players scored in double figures including a game-high 20 points from Lauren Salazar to cruise to a 104-46 victory over Pacific Union College in the fifth game of the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic on Tuesday. The game was played at Hope's Darling Pavilion. The Royals improved to 9-3 while keeping the Pioneers winless on the season at 0-8.
Hope used an 18-0 run to break open the game early and jump out to a 31-8 lead at the midway point of the first half. Things didn't get much better than that. as the Royals went up by 50 just five minutes into the second half and cruised from there. Champ Hood had 16 points and 17 rebounds in 17 minutes for Hope. Four players had seven points each for the Pioneers.
GAME SIX - BIOLA UNIVERSITY 67, UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA 61 - BOX SCORE
Senior Jennifer French scored all of her team-high 16 points in the second half to lead Biola to a 67-61 victory over the University of Alberta in the third game of the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium. The Eagles, ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA Division I rankings, improve to 9-2 on the season while dropping the Pandas to 12-7 on the year.
French recovered from a poor-shooting first half where she missed all seven of her shots and drained 6-of-13 in the second half including 4-of-8 from three-point range. French was one of three Eagles in double-figures with Jessilyn Conicelli scoring 15 points and Christina Barclay recording 10 points and adding 12 rebounds.
GAME SEVEN - VALLEY CITY STATE 69, PACIFIC UNION 34 - BOX SCORE
Valley City State University used a monster first half to build a big lead en route to a 69-34 win over Pacific Union College in the first game of the second day of action at the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic on Wednesday. Brittany Lehner led all scorers with 16 points for the Vikings (10-4), coming off the bench to hit 8-of-12 from the field.
The Pioneers were able to hit just 19 percent from the field in the first half, trailing 40-16 at the break. The Vikings were able to force 26 turnovers in the contest and converted them into 31 points.
GAME EIGHT - THE MASTER'S 89, LA SIERRA 66 - BOX SCORE
The Master's College outscored La Sierra 30-13 over the final 10 minutes of the first half and never looked back, cruising to an 89-66 victory in game eight of the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (10-2) were led by Theresa Brown, who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds, hitting 9-of-15 from the field in the game. Brown, who had 11 points and 12 rebounds at intermission, was one of five players for The Master's to reach double-figures in the game. Natalia Hawthorne led the way for the Golden Eagles (5-14) with 14 points.
GAME NINE - MIDLANDS 75, WILLIAM JESSUP 57 - BOX SCORE
Midlands University broke open a close game with a 24-7 run over a seven minute run midway through the second half to pick up a 75-57 victory over William Jessup University in game nine of the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic on Wednesday night at Chase Gymnasium. Olivia Miller had a game-high 20 points and was one of four Midlands (8-8) players to score in double-figures. William Jessup was led by Ashley Rose, who had 16 points.
William Jessup had the better of play in the first half, leading by as many as seven points and heading to the half with a 32-29 lead. In the second half the teams went back and forth until Midlands broke a 42-42 tie with a 24-7 run to take a commanding 66-47 lead with 6:18 to go and cruised from there.
GAME 10 - AZUSA PACIFIC 81, EVANGEL 48 - BOX SCORE
Azusa Pacific rebounded from a tough loss in its Classic opener to dominate Evangel University 81-48 on Wednesday at the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic. The Cougars (10-3) received a strong effort from Michelle Bryd, who scored a game-high 16 points and went 6-of-7 from the field including 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Kara Blankenship and Ashlee Luko each had nine to pace the Crusaders (4-6).
Azusa Pacific wasted no time, jumping out to an early 11-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Evangel cut the lead to five but could get no closer and trailed by 15 at the half. In the second, the Cougars again opened strong, scoring the first 14 points of the second half and running away with the game late.
GAME 11 - LEWIS-CLARK STATE 71, HOPE INTERNATIONAL 59 - BOX SCORE
Lewis-Clark State pulled away late from a pesky Hope International University team which made the fourth-ranked Warriors earn a hard-fought 71-59 victory on Wednesday night at the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic. Tasha Bishop had a game-high 21 points to lead LCSC (13-1) and was one of three players to score in double-figures.
The Royals (9-4) got an early jump on the Warriors, opening the game with a quick 6-0 run. But Lewis-Clark State pulled back on top and led by as many as 14 before heading the half up 36-29. In the second, Hope pulled back to within three on a pair of occasions, but LCSC responded with a 14-2 run to go back up by 14 points. The Royals would get no closer the rest of the way.
GAME 12 - BIOLA 65, HOLY NAMES 58 - BOX SCORE
Senior guard Jennifer French scored 29 points and senior forward Jessilyn Conicelli added 19 points to lead Biola to a hard-fought 65-58 victory over Holy Names University on Wednesday night at the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic at Chase Gymnasium.
In the second half, Biola stretched the lead to as many as 20 as Deshaye Sells hit a jumper with 12:20 to play to put the Eagles up 52-32. But the Hawks refused to go away and pulled to within 11 just four minutes later on a three-pointer by Danika Potestio which made it 54-43 with under eight minutes to go. Biola would go back up by 13 at 56-43, Holy Names caught fire, using a 12-3 run to cut the lead to four at 59-55 with 1:59 remaining. But that would be as close as they could get as the Eagles converted free throws and forced a pair of turnovers down the stretch to pull out the victory.
GAME 13 - MIDLAND UNIVERSITY 77, PACIFIC UNION 59 - BOX SCORE
Adrina LaVern scored 24 points and added 12 rebounds to lead Midland University to a 77-59 victory over Pacific Union College on Thursday at the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic. The Warriors wrapped up a perfect 3-0 tournament with the victory and improve to 9-8 on the season. The Pioneers dropped to 0-10.
After a back-and-forth first 10 minutes of the contest, Midland used a 20-5 run over the next seven minutes to break the game open and take a 35-21 lead with 2:41 left in the half. The Pioneers pulled back to within eight on a pair of occasions early in the second half, but the Warriors continued to pull away. Vanessa Felder had 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead Pacific Union while JoAnn Mauries added 17 points.
GAME 14 - VALLEY CITY STATE 70, HOPE INTERNATIONAL 65 - BOX SCORE
Valley City State fought off a long run midway through the second half and held on for a 70-65 victory over Hope International University on the final day of action at the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic. The Vikings (11-4), ranked No. 23 in the NAIA Division II rankings, finished the Classic with a perfect 3-0 record. VCSU was led by 19 points from Mandi Bindas, who added a team -high eight rebounds. Bindas drained a clutch three-pointer with 1:30 left to stretch the Viking lead to six after Hope had pulled to within three.
Hope received a 17-point, nine-rebound effort from Champ Hood, but was unable to do much from long range, hitting just 2-of-20 from three-point range in the contest. Hope took its first lead of the game at 43-42 with 9:20 to go in the game, but the Vikings responded with a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to go back up by seven. Hope could get no closer than three the rest of the way.
GAME 15 - AZUSA PACIFIC 101, LA SIERRA 49 - BOX SCORE
Alex Moore-Porter scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting and added eight rebounds all in just 15 minutes to lead Azusa Pacific University to a 101-49 victory over La Sierra University on the final day of the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic. The Cougars wrap up the tournament with a 2-1 record and improve to 11-3 on the season while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-15.
Azusa Pacific completely dominated the contest from the start, leading 47-19 at the half. The Cougars broke a school record with 73 rebounds with 37 of them coming on the offensive glass. Brianna Hall scored 13 points and Eboni Sadlar added 10 as 15 of the 16 APU players scored in the contest. Joirdan Jones led the Golden Eagles with 15 points.
GAME 16 - LEWIS-CLARK STATE 83, THE MASTER'S 71 - BOX SCORE
Lewis-Clark State closed out the first half with a big run and fought off a late challenge from The Master's College to win 83-71 on the final day of the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic. The Warriors (14-1) end the classic with a perfect 3-0 record while the Mustangs (10-3) won two of their three games. The Master's Erica Inge led all scorers with 27 points including scoring 12-straight points early in the second-half. Kirsi Voshell and Jasmine Stohr each scored 16 points to pace Lewis-Clark State.
The game opened with the two teams going back-and-forth, but quickly turned in favor of the Warriors. LCSC held a six-point lead at 25-19 with 5:56 to play before coming alive and outscoring the Mustangs 18-5 the rest of the half to take a 43-24 lead to the locker room. Late in the second half, The Master's was able to cut the deficit to 11, but could get no closer and eventually fell by 12.
GAME 17 - BIOLA vs. EVANGEL
