Biola Battles No. 9 Pepperdine

Starling scores five as Eagles compete against nationally ranked Waves

MALIBU, Calif. --- The Biola men's water polo team took on the No. 9 team in the country, the Pepperdine Waves, inside Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. The Eagles lost 12-20.

Gavin Starling led the Eagles with five goals, while Noah Ryznar added a goal and an assist. Carson Crocket scored twice, and Micah Hernandez added a goal and an assist. Caden Digby, Landon Heuer and Kevin Slack rounded out the Biola scoring column with one goal apiece.

Pepperdine jumped out to a 5-1 first-quarter lead, before Slack got the Eagles on the board with just under three minutes left in the frame. The Waves' pressure continued in the second, extending the advantage to 10-3 by halftime.

Biola showed more life after the break, matching Pepperdine goal-for-goal in the third quarter, 5-5. Heuer assisted Digby on the opening goal of the third frame, while Ryznar, Heuer and Starling also found the net. Starling capped the frame with a second goal in the final seconds.

Pepperdine outscored Biola 5-4 in the fourth quarter, with Hernandez, Starling and Crocket each finding the net for the Eagles, but the deficit built over the first two periods proved too much to overcome.

Cooper Smith and Igor Pinheiro split time in goal for Biola, combining for 10 saves.

The Eagles will play No. 15 UC Santa Barbara at 2:30 p.m. completing competition in the Pepperdine Round Robin.
