SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Big middle innings for Westmont keyed a 7-2 victory for the home team to open the Saturday PacWest baseball doubleheader. The Warriors take a 2-1 lead in the series with a 7-inning finale due up just after 2 p.m.
Both Biola runs came courtesy of Jonny Tewinkle who continues his hot streak. He was 3-for-4 and had two solo home runs.
The two starting pitchers traded zeroes in the early stages, with no team getting a run until Westmont exploded for four in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Westmont had three hits in the inning, but also capitalized on two Biola errors to plate some extra two-out runs. Gabe Magallan got the start on the bump for head coach Jesse Rodgers and went five innings.
Defense ended up being a key part of the game, as the Eagles had another error in the next inning and four total in the game. That opened up room for WC to lead 6-0 after four innings and never look back.
Biola managed seven hits and never stopped battling to plate one run in the seventh and another in the ninth. Westmont's starting pitcher Joey Rico was key to their victory, going 6.2 innings and only being responsible for that first Biola run. Rico also went 2-for-4 with a run scored and stolen base.
Aidan Cube had a strong relief effort in this contest, coming in for the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and only surrendering three hits and one run.
The loss drops Biola to 10-9 overall and 6-5 in league play. They will look to salvage a season split with the No. 23 Warriors in the series finale Saturday afternoon.
