True freshman goalkeeper earns WWPA Defensive Player of the Week after an 11-save performance in the Eagles’ conference opener

February 25, 2026

LA MIRADA --- Fernanda Luna, a true freshman goalkeeper out of Leon, Mexico, earned her first WWPA Defensive Player of the Week honors on Wednesday afternoon.

In the Eagles conference opener against CUI, Luna played a pivotal role in goal. She logged 11 saves and allowed only six goals, keeping the Golden Eagles scoreless in the fourth period. She also recorded two steals and a save percentage of .647. She's tied for second in saves (87), third in saves per game (6.7), and fourth in save percentage (.429).

"We're incredibly proud of Fernanda for earning WWPA Defensive Player of the Week. In our 13–6 conference win over Concordia, she made several momentum-shifting saves that anchored our defense and allowed us to control the game.

What stands out most is her composure. Through the adversity we've faced this season, she's remained steady, continued to grow, and led from the cage with confidence. This award reflects her preparation, resilience, and the leadership she brings to our team. It's well deserved."
