Great Pitching & an Explosive Sixth Seals the Deal

The Biola Eagles swept APU in their conference opener.

LA MIRADA---It was a statement day at Freedom Field, as the Biola softball team opened conference play with a sweep of Azusa Pacific. Biola set the tone in game one with an 8–3 victory, then carried that momentum into the nightcap, securing a 4–1 win to complete the two-game sweep.

APU struck first with a run in the first inning, but Biola responded right away. Jackie Ibarra and Alexa Medley Sheard led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Ibarra would later score from an APU error.

After an active first inning, four scoreless innings would pass. Kayla Bousquette was locked in a pitching duel with APU's Hernandez. Three of the four scoreless innings were 1-2-3 innings for Bousquette and she would record two strikeouts during that time.

Biola's breakthrough inning happened in the sixth. Medley Sheard, Kendall Nakano, Ariana Banos and Lizzie Byer recorded singles. Banos scored the go-ahead run with a well-placed push bunt. BU's final two runs scored from Byer's single to center.

With a three-run lead, Bousquette threw an expert seventh inning, recording two fly outs and a grounder. The Senior threw the complete game and only allowed five hits and the one earned run to score. Bousquette improved 4-2 overall in the circle with BU's 4-1 win over Azusa Pacific.

BU plays next on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
