Eagles Soar to Season’s First Win

Eleven goal-scorers and stout defense lift Biola past La Verne, 22-5

Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. --- The Biola women's water polo team secured its first win of the season against the La Verne Leopards in dominant fashion, 22-5.

Three Eagles logged hat tricks, including Annabella Rapp, who led all scorers with four goals. Ava LoBue and Gwendolyn Pidd both fired three goals each, while Stephanie Rodriguez, Kajsa Brown, Destiny Moreno, and Mia Mulhall all scored two goals apiece. Alyssa Cuevas, Karly Lepel, Sofia Lazzarini Orlandi, and Alyah Ibarra contributed solo goals. As a team, the Eagles assisted on nine of their 22 goals. Biola shot 52 percent, going 22-for-42.

Fernanda Luna and Clara McKee limited the Leopard offense to only five goals and combined for 10 saves.

In the first frame, Mulhall started the scoring one minute into the game, logging her first goal off a La Verne turnover. Rapp would follow three minutes later, giving the Eagles back the lead, 2-1 through one.

Biola exploded for eight goals in the second period alone and shut down the Leopard offense. Rodriguez slotted her first goal of the frame. Pidd followed suit one minute later. Mulhall scored at the halfway mark, while Rapp, Lazzarini Orlandi, Brown, and Cuevas all scored in the final two and a half minutes. Brown closed out the half with a power-play goal, giving BU a nine-goal advantage at the buzzer.

The Eagles combined for 12 goals in the second half, starting with a goal by Pidd. She followed that goal with another score on a penalty shot. Moreno tacked on one more four minutes through the third. The Leopards responded with three straight goals before LoBue secured Biola's first power-play goal. Rodriguez closed out the third period with a goal.

The fourth frame was all BU, as they scored seven and allowed none. Ibarra and Rapp each scored one minute apart. Rapp tacked on another before LoBue and Lepel each scored. Moreno and LoBue scored on back-to-back possessions in the final minute, closing out the statement win.

The Eagles are now 1-10 overall and will face Azusa Pacific at 10:30 a.m.
