Furlan Fires in Game-Winner Against APU

The Biola men’s soccer team had a thrilling 1-0 shutout win over Azusa Pacific Saturday night at Al Barbour Field.

LA MIRADA---The Biola men's soccer team had a thrilling 1-0 shutout win over Azusa Pacific Saturday night at Al Barbour Field.

"Tonight was a proper Biola vs APU derby," stated head coach Joey O'Keefe. "Intense, full of grit, both teams putting it all in the line and we were evenly matched teams."

Brennan Furlan fired in the Eagles' game-winning goal in the 57th minute. Ryan Ellsworth earned Biola the penalty kick opportunity after being fouled in the box. Furlan's goal was his fourth of the season and this was the third-consecutive match where he scored a goal.

"The buildup to our PK was excellent," reflected O'Keefe. "We had dynamic runs from our attacking unit and a well timed slipped in ball from behind. Ryan was explosive to get to it first before he was fouled in the box. We've counted on Brennan to score from dead ball opportunities and he's been excellent in his poise and focus in those moments."

Two Eagles played the full 90, Ethan Hardin and Francesco Tricarico. Tricarico, Biola's keeper, had four saves against the Cougars. One was in the first half and three were in the final 20 minutes of the match. This was also his second shutout of the season.

"Our back-line stood tall and answered the call over and over again for 90 minutes," O'Keefe shared. "They're building a strong résumé here with back to back shut outs - we are a difficult team to beat."

O'Keefe continued, "The sobering truth is that after we celebrate this win tonight, preseason will be in the rear view mirror. We'll be confident in having a winning preseason record against some top quality opposition from our super region. But we need to wipe the slate clean and get back to work."

"Starting Monday our record is 0–0 and I hope we fight on Thursday night back at home in front of our amazing fans for PacWest Conference play," concluded O'Keefe.
