Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Billi Derleth, Sports Information Director

Opening Conference with Home Victory

The Biola men’s soccer team had an exciting start to PacWest Conference play, defeating Jessup University 5-0 at Al Barbour Field.

LA MIRADA---The Biola men's soccer team had an exciting start to PacWest Conference play, defeating Jessup University 5-0 at Al Barbour Field.

"Tonight was a great start to PacWest Conference play, the guys were well up for getting ourselves started on the right foot," stated head coach Joey O'Keefe.

O'Keefe continued, "First and foremost I'm so proud of the team for keeping another clean sheet at home. Making this place a fortress is so important and we are building good habits for the rest of the season."

Ryan Ellsworth and Luca McGreevey Couchman scored two goals a piece against the Warriors. Ellsworth netted the first and second goals of the match and McGreevey Couchman knocked in the final two.

Ellsworth recorded his fifth goal of the year and McGreevey Couchman tallied his third.

"Ryan's been a reliable and strong player in the attack in the early days of this season for us, he seems to be hitting stride at the right time," shared O'Keefe. "Luca bagged two goals for himself after an extended time out with injury was very important for his confidence and belief."

When asked about his thoughts after the match, Ellsworth commented, "For the first conference game it feels great to win 5-0, but we have such a long way to go."

Ellsworth continued, "Luca coming in off the bench and bagging two right away, that's so crucial for us. 5-0 feels great but tomorrow we are straight back at it."

McGreevey Couchman added, "Like Ryan was saying, we have a game so close after this one so we already have to start thinking about that one. This win feels so good because we have had so many close games."

Gauthier Caloz and Ethan Hardin earned assists on Ellsworth's first goal in the 14th minute.

"I think once we scored the first goal, [the energy] felt good," shared Ellsworth. "And then the flood gates opened and we kept going and that felt amazing."

Jackson Finn and Lamar McKenzie assisted Ellsworth's second goal. The Eagles third goal was scored by McKenzie in the 33rd minute with the help of David Setters who had a well-placed throw in. McKenzie earned his second goal of the season and the first assist of his collegiate career.

O'Keefe stated, "Lamar with the goal and assist was another strong performance for him as he's returning from injury just at the right time as well."

Setters, Sam So and Jeremy Larson recorded assists on the final goals scored by McGreevey Couchman. Setters assisted McGreevey Couchman's first goal in the 72nd minute and So and Larson teamed up on his goal in the 83rd.

Francesco Tricarico and Elijah Mineiro split time in the goal for BU. Tricarico played 75 minutes and made two saves. Mineiro closed out the final 14 minutes and made two saves.

The Eagles improve 4-2-2 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest while the Warriors fall 1-5-2 and 0-3-0.

Biola will rest on Friday and prepare for another home match on Saturday, October 4th at 2 p.m. against Menlo.
