Biola Drops Sudden Death Heartbreaker to Chapman

An overtime thriller got away from the Eagles, as Saturday started with a tough finish.

FULLERTON, Calif. --- The final horn told a story of heartbreak for Biola Men's Water Polo, who fell 12–11 in sudden death overtime to Chapman on Saturday morning in a wild, back-and-forth contest at the Fullerton Aquatics Center.

Biola couldn't have asked for a stronger start, racing to a 4–0 lead in the opening quarter behind goals from Ivan Tkach, Noah Ryznar, Nick Murray, and Ryan Previch. But Chapman slowly clawed back, outscoring the Eagles across the second and third quarters to even the game heading into the final frame.

Still, Biola had answers. Down two with just over a minute to go in regulation, Ryznar buried his fourth goal, and Kevin Slack delivered a dramatic equalizer with four seconds remaining to force overtime.

The teams traded blows again in OT, with Tkach completing his hat trick and Caleb Hernandez putting Biola ahead 11–10. But Chapman responded, leveling the match once more and eventually netting the game-winner in sudden death.

Ryznar led the Eagles with four goals, and three assists for seven points, while Tkach finished with a hat trick. Murray added a goal and a steal, and Hernandez posted a goal, assist, and two steals.

Goalkeeper Joshua Dachenhausen recorded 14 saves, anchoring a Biola defense that tallied nine steals and five field blocks.

Biola will be back in action under the lights on Saturday, facing Cal State Fullerton at 7:00 pm.
