Eagles Drop Opening Round to Cougars

The Biola softball team lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Cal State San Marcos in the opening round of the NCAA Division II West Regional.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.---The Biola softball team lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Cal State San Marcos in the opening round of the NCAA Division II West Regional.

"I'm super proud of our team," stated head coach Kristin Halte. "Cal State San Marcos is a great team and we did a great job of holding down their offense. We just didn't clutch up when we needed to and made some mistakes that will cost you at this level but I'm super proud of my team and the way they fought and hung in there."

The Eagles led the third-seeded Cougars for a majority of the game. Biola had a hot start, scoring two runs in the first inning. Maddie Granados scored the first run of the inning with a single to second base. The second run was scored in Makayla Jordan's at-bat when she was walked with bases loaded.

Cal State San Marcos answered with a single run in the first inning and went on to tie up the game with a solo run in the fifth inning.

Despite a great effort by Biola, CSUSM would push across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. A single, sacrifice bunt and another single would put the Cougars ahead 3-2.

DJ Symons threw a great game in the circle for Biola. In 6.1 innings of work, the Junior allowed two earned runs and seven hits. She also struck out three.

"Once I got on to the mound I felt pretty confident in myself," said Symons. "I know that I have a really good defense behind me."

The Eagles enter the elimination bracket and will face the seventh-seed Saint Martin's at 1:30 p.m. at SFSU Field.
