Eagles Advance in Winner’s Bracket

The Biola softball team began the PacWest Championships with a 4-0 victory over fourth-seeded Dominican.

IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola softball team began the PacWest Championships with a 4-0 victory over fourth-seeded Dominican. 

"It's always great to get the first win under your belt," stated head coach Kristin Halte. "I'm really proud of our team for the energy they brought and the fight they had."

Raquel Reyes and DJ Symons teamed up in the circle to shut out the Penguins. Reyes started the game and only allowed Dominican four hits in six innings of work while striking out six. The Graduate Student received the win in the circle and her overall record improved to 11-4. 

"Coach did a great job of calling my pitches and mixing it up well," reflected Reyes. "My change up was working well, I love that pitch, and it was really effective."

Symons closed out the last inning, successfully shutting out the Penguins. The Junior threw to five batters, struck out one and allowed one hit in the seventh inning.

Reyes concluded, "I knew DJ would come in and do well and get us the win."

The Eagles scored runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings. Biola had five hits in the first inning and scored two runs. Jackie Ibarra, Alexa Medley, Reyes, Mikala Huskey and Maddie Granados recorded hits. Biola's runs were scored by Huskey and Granados.

Ibarra's hit in the first inning gave her 80 on the season which broke the Biola Softball Program's Single Season Record for hits.

Nakano scored Biola's single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. 

Three Eagles batted .500 or above including Nakano (3-for-4), Ibarra (2-for-3) and Huskey (1-for-2).

Biola advances in the winner's bracket and will play the winner of the APU and CUI game tomorrow Wednesday, May 1st at 11 a.m.
