Eyes on the Prize

Biola is prime for another run at the WWPA Tournament this weekend, eyeing a three-peat.

April 25, 2025

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. --- The reigning champs are en route to the WWPA Championships with a goal to retain their crown. Biola will be looking for its third-consecutive conference title, beginning on Saturday in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Salem University will play host to the 2025 WWPA Women's Water Polo Championships from Friday through Sunday at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.

The Eagles enter the three-day tournament as the No. 1 seed in the West and have earned a bye in the first round alongside the No. 1 East team, McKendree. The opening day of the tournament on Friday will see an exhibition for Biola against future WWPA member, UC Merced.

The first tournament action for the BU squad is set for Saturday. The Eagles will play Cal State Monterey Bay, who is the No. 3 seed coming out of the west. The Otters took down Salem on Friday afternoon in the opening round to advance to face the Eagles in the semifinals on Saturday.

Biola and Cal State Monterey Bay battled twice in the regular season with the BU squad taking both matchups. The two teams were evenly matched with narrow margins in each bout. The second half was the space of success for the Eagles, who outscored the Otters, 11-6, in the back half of those contests.

Biola has won all nine of its matches against CSUMB, including a win in the WWPA Championship game in 2023.

Six different Eagles were honored earlier this week with all-conference accolades. BU's leading goal-scorer Veralie Naranjo led the way for the team as a First Team All-WWPA selection, while Ava LoBue was an all-around star with a Second Team All-WWPA nod.

The star-studded roster will look to cement its place atop the conference with a third title in as many years without its head coach. Head Coach Sarah Ramirez did not make the trip across the United States, as she is out on maternity leave. The team will be led by Elyssa Hawkins, the first year assistant coach for the Eagles.
