A Sweep Finale

Biola shuts out Academy of Art to close out a dominant 4-game sweep.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — A dominant two-way performance from Raquel Reyes highlighted the final game of Biola's four-game set with Academy of Art as the graduate transfer helped Biola to a 6-0 victory to seal a sweep.

Reyes threw six near-perfect innings in the circle, holding the Urban Knights to just four hits and one walk in relatively stress-free innings of work. She had great command of the game, inducing a nice mix of eight groundouts, seven flyouts and a handful of Ks.

In the batter's box, the Placentia native directly contributed to run scoring in the first and fifth innings. Her sacrifice fly in the first extended Biola's early lead to 2-0. She added an RBI double in the fifth to expand the lead to five runs. Reyes is second on the team with five doubles this year and also second with a .560 slugging percentage.

The shutout win helped Biola finish the four-game set on a 9-inning scoreless inning streak on defense. Head Coach Kristin Halte's team outscored the Urban Knights 43-8 in the last two days.

DJ Symons closed out the game in the circle to lock up game two for the Birds. She had a dominant inning and also mixed her outs well with one strikeout, one groundout and one flyout.

Biola scored its six runs off seven hits, with seven different players providing the hits. Cami Lara joined Reyes as Biolans with multiple RBI. The super pinch hitter came in for Makayla Jordan in the fourth inning and got a two-RBI single. Lara's got six RBI now on the year with a 4-for-11 performance in the box (.364).

Kendall Nakano continued her standout freshman campaign, reaching base each time she stepped into the box in this one. She had an RBI double in the first and then the Urban Knights decided they no longer wanted to deal with her bat, walking her twice. She finished this series 7-for-9, hit a homer, had eight RBI, scored five runs and reached base on balls four times. Nakano is top-5 in the PacWest in slugging percentage, RBI and home runs.

The sweep helps set Biola on a good path in conference play. The Eagles improved to 13-9 overall and 7-1 in PacWest Conference play. Up next for BU is a three-game conference series against the Dominican Penguins (14-10, 5-3 PacWest).

The first games of the series had a time change to avoid some evening rain. The Eagles and Penguins begin play with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Monday, March 10 at Freedom Field.
