Spring Forward on Spring Break

The final day of spring break saw Biola hit the Ben Brown Invite once again, as the short distance and field athletes took center stage.

FULLERTON, Calif. --- The Biola track and field teams headed back to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday to compete in the final day of the Ben Brown Invitational. The Eagles made their way onto the podium three times and came home with seven top ten finishes. 


Hurdles were a point of success for BU, as Josh Widdows paced the squad on the track. The freshman nabbed two podium finishes, including an event crown in the 400 hurdles. The top place finish for Widdows came with a NCAA DII Provisional mark of 51.91, which beat the field by over one second. He also cashed in for second place in the 110 hurdles at 14.52, coming up .36 seconds short of first place.

Hannah Hanson and Ebose Omofoma also found success in the hurdles events. In the women's 400 hurdles, the pair represented Biola in the top six of 21 runners. Omofoma finished in third at 1:02.63 and Hanson finished behind her at 1:03.97, logging a sixth place finish. The two Eagles also competed in the women's 100 hurdles where they were two of 31 runners in the event. Hanson finished in eighth place with Omofoma just .07 seconds behind in 11th place. Joley Sproul was the third Eagle in the event, finishing in 18th place at 15.27. 

Jack Sapyta put together a nice day on the track with strong finishes in the 400 and 200 races. The junior nabbed ninth in the 400 at 48.93 and followed it up with a 22nd place effort in the 200 at 22.19. 

Matthew Kaloustian beat out Sapyta in the 200, claiming 18th place with a mark of 21.92 to lead all Eagles. Kaloustian opened his day in the 100 dash, taking 20th place at 10.80. Steven Cuevas was not far behind in 27th place with a time of 10.98.

On the women's side, three Eagles reached the top-26 in the 100 including Kailey Centers in 22nd, Priscilla Jones in 24th and Audrey Mousa in 26th.

Between the 200 and 400, Jaden Murray offered great performances. She began her day with the 400 race, landing in 17th place with her first sub-58 time of 57.77, before adding a team-best 24th place finish in the 200 at 25.68.

On the field, AJ Antonio recorded a sixth place finish against 12 other opponents in the men's high jump at the 2.01m mark. On the women's side of the event, Omofoma recorded a seventh place finish at the 1.61m mark. 

Hope Willis tallied to Biola's top ten count with her 40.38m performance in the women's discus throw. Willis was in the seven spot out of 30 athletes. Norah DeYoung and Leah Gilmore were amongst her competitors. DeYoung finished in 12th and Gilmore recorded a 37.21m throw for 14th. 

In the women's shot put, Laura Brennen led the Eagles squad with a top ten, 12.06m throw. Willis missed her teammate by just .03 meters, recording an 11th place finish in the event. 

Six men and two women competed at the Oxy Distance Saturday night. Alyssa Stumbo and Caitlin Chea took 96th and 100th place and Jake Sorani grabbed 129th for the men in the 5000m run.
 
Biola track and field will be back in action next week at the Ross & Sharon Irwin Invitational at Point Loma on Saturday.
