Tough End to Hard-Fought Series

The bubble burst in the seventh, as Biola fell to Vanguard in game two, 8-3.

LA MIRADA --- The final installment of the Biola (15-16, 12-12 PacWest), Vanguard (20-14, 16-12 PacWest) series began as a tight-knit battle in a seven-inning affair. A surge in the seventh for the Lions made the difference in a 8-3 win for Vanguard, leading to a series split.

The weekend series featured wins from the visiting teams in all four games between Friday and Saturday.

Game four began as a defensive bout, as the two teams combined for three runs through six frames.

The Lions struck first with a lone run in the second, which was followed by a single run in the fifth, as well.

John Iacono kept the visitors at bay, dealing four and two-thirds innings. The freshman tallied five strikeouts, while allowing four hits, two walks, and two runs.

Biola earned one run back in the fifth. Isaiah Leon singled and eventually came around and scored with the help of two Vanguard errors.

A 2-1 ballgame carried into the seventh but the Lions struck large. A mix of base hits and errors led to VU batting through the lineup and piling on six runs for a 8-1 edge in the final frame.

The first four batters reached base for the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh, as the team looked to pull off another miracle. Adiel Torres logged an RBI single to score Noah Ruiz and Leon to bring BU within five with no outs. James Whitman sent a comebacker up the middle for another single but the rally stalled there. One more runner reached but the Eagles could not capitalize.

Whitman and Torres survived their hitting streaks with base knocks in the final inning. Ruiz and Whitman extended their streaks to 13, while Torres and Leon pushed theirs to 12.

Luke Caruso put together a great day at the plate on Saturday, going 2-4 in both games.

The Eagles will look to bounce back at Westmont on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am.
