Biola Takes Two but Falls to No. 6 APU

The doubles point showed promise but Biola could not overcome the Cougars.

LA MIRADA --- A rematch between Biola (6-8) and No. 6 Azusa Pacific (14-3) spelled the same fate. The Eagles came up short, 5-2, once again, this time at their home Biola Tennis Center.

BU stood tall against tough competition, delivering the first blow on Thursday. The statement doubles point came with impressive 6-3 showings from the number one and two spots.

The first court to fall went the way of the Cougars in doubles, as the No. 3 doubles match ended 6-3 for APU. With the top two courts sitting at 4-3 in favor of BU, the opening point sat in balance. The Eagles did not waver and both matches ended with double flips for Biola, as Alejandro Flores Monteverde and Jules Zanarelli won on court one and Patricio Larrea and Santino Serralonga scored on court two.

Following the doubles point, APU took control. The singles portion came with decisive scores, as the Cougars piled on five points in straight-set contests.

Zanarelli found success for the Eagles from the No. 3 spot. The freshman worked his way past a 5-5 tie in the first set for a 7-5 win to hold the edge. Set number two mirrored set one with a tie at 5-5 and Zanarelli capitalized again. He posted back-to-back 7-5 set wins for his fifth singles win of 2025.

The Eagles will be back at home on Saturday, facing Point Loma at 3:00 pm.
