Series Sweep Complete

Biola polished off its three-game series against CSULA with a 9-7 win for a sweep.

LA MIRADA --- Timely rallies, big outs, and clutch play led the Eagles to their third win in as many days. A series sweep of Cal State LA (2-4) was completed on Monday, as Biola Baseball (3-4) claimed the single game, 9-7.

CSULA was the first on the board in the game, striking first in the third inning. Three runs came across on two hits, as the visitors opened up a 3-0 lead.

The Biola bats got in on the action in the fourth inning, flipping the script and creating their own three-run lead.

Six runs came across for the Eagles in the fourth frame. Noah Ruiz kicked off the at bat with a homer to left field. Including Ruiz, six-straight batters reached base for BU, as the host squad evened the game at three and loaded the bases. Tommy Kendlinger cleaned up the inning with a three-run triple for a 6-3 Biola edge.

The Eagle offense continued to add to their lead in the fifth and sixth frames with RBI singles from Jonny Tewinkle and Ruiz.

The Golden Eagles rallied late to make a game of it on Monday. Two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh put the visitors within one with an inning and a half to go.

A perfectly manufactured run gave Biola some breathing room in the bottom of the eighth. Isaiah Leon led off with a single, before being replaced on the base path by Cole Thomson. Thomson moved to second with a sacrifice bunt by Nick Madole. The insurance run came across on the next at bat with a double from Kendlinger.

The 9-7 scoreline stuck through the finish, as Dylan Alanis scored the save. The righty reliever made quick work of the first two outs, before back-to-back seeing-eye singles brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate for CSULA. A groundout ended the game, as BU sealed the victory.

The BU lineup was solid from top to bottom with all nine starters reaching base on Monday. Sam Lisiak put in work with four plate appearances with three hits and two runs scored.

Kendlinger shined in the leadoff spot, going two-for-five with four RBI. The junior also recorded a double and a triple. Ruiz also logged two hits with two RBI, a home run, and a stolen base.

Jack O'Brien drew the start and posted two scoreless innings. Blake Wentz collected the win on the mound, delivering 2.2 innings and logging three strikeouts. Kyle Osterhage offered a crucial three outs in the eighth, keeping CSULA silent.

Biola will now enter PacWest play, facing Point Loma on the road on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am.
