Biola Caps CUI Kickoff

The softball team completed the CUI Kickoff with back-to-back games against Cal State East Bay and Chico State.

IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola softball team completed the CUI Kickoff with back-to-back games against Cal State East Bay and Chico State.

Game 1: BIOLA 1 CSUEB 5
The Eagles lost their first game of the day 5-1 against CSUEB. The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead, scoring single runs in the first and second innings.

Biola kept the game close, shutting down Cal State East Bay in the third and fourth innings. BU split their deficit in half in the top of the fifth where they scored their first run of the game. Jackie Ibarra singled to get the inning going and was eventually scored off a CSUEB error (2-1).

The Pioneers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth and then pushed across one more in the sixth while holding the Eagles' to one run (5-1).

Maddie Granados pitched her first collegiate complete game. The Freshman had one strikeout and allowed the Pioneers eight hits in six innings of work.

Game 2: BIOLA 1 CHICO STATE 9
Biola took on Chico State in their second game of the day. The Wildcats struck first with a single run in the second and built upon that lead with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Chico State scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and then tacked on four runs in the fifth which gave them a 7-0 advantage.

The Eagles were able to respond in the sixth where they pushed across a run. Ibarra worked her way on base off an error, advanced to second from a strategic sacrifice bunt by Alexa Medley and eventually scored from a wild pitch (7-1).

The Wildcats were able to regroup and scored two more runs in Biola's eventual 9-1 loss at Great Park.

Three Eagles saw time in the circle against Chico State. Kayla Bousquette got the start, allowing five runs to score from 4.1 innings of work. DJ Symons closed out the fifth where she recorded one strikeout and allowed two more runs to score. Raquel Reyes closed the last two innings. The Graduate Student held the Wildcats scoreless in the sixth, but they managed to score twice in the top of the seventh from two hits.

The Eagles have their home opener on Monday, February 3 at 3 and 5:30 p.m. against nationally-ranked No. 18 Northwest Nazarene.
