Eagles Fall After Fast Start

Gehler’s hot shooting drives the offense despite the setback at home.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola men's basketball team took on the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in Chase Gymnasium on Saturday night. After a back-and-forth battle, the Eagles fell to the Broncos, 80-72.

Charlie Gehler delivered a career performance, pouring in 28 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and three steals. The junior guard was electric from deep, drilling seven three-pointers and shooting 53% from the floor. Cameron Brown added 18 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Tyus Parrish-Tillman posted a well-rounded 14 points and eight boards. The trio combined for 60 of Biola's 72 points. As a team, the Eagles shot 41% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc.

The first half was an even scoring affair. Biola started off hot on a 12-5 run thanks to four threes from Gehler and Parrish-Tillman. The depth of the Bronco bench was on full display scoring 15 bench points to Biola's zero in the opening 20 minutes. Defense played a huge part for both teams as the first half ended with the Broncos up, 38-33.

Heading into the second half, Biola was looking for someone to step up. Gehler kept his shooting stride in the second, and Brown found success attacking downhill to keep BU within striking distance. The Broncos, however, kept the Eagles at a distance with timely buckets. Biola pulled to within seven after a Facundo Aranda steal led to free throws, but the Broncos answered with a 10–3 run that recreated separation. Brown and Gehler continued to score late, but Pomona's 14 points off turnovers in the half proved the difference as the Eagles' comeback effort came up short.

The Eagles (3-2) will hit the road as they open conference play against Fresno Pacific (1-5) on Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
