Broke the Ice

Win number one came through for Biola, defeating La Verne on the road on Friday.

LA VERNE, Calif. --- The Eagles put themselves in the winning column on Friday afternoon. Biola women's water polo claimed a 16-9 win over NCAA DIII La Verne behind a 6-0 run in the first half.

A difficult preseason schedule for BU continued on Friday with a road matchup at La Verne. Biola took advantage of its first non-NCAA DI foe and reached its season high in goals.

Eight different Eagles netted a goal in the win with four picking up multiple scores.

The crucial rally for BU came in the first half, beginning late in the first quarter. A 2-2 start turned into a 8-2 Biola advantage with a surge through nine minutes of gametime.

A 6-0 run put the Eagles in the driver seat, as an all-around team effort netted five even-strength goals. The BU defense did the work holding the Leopards scoreless for nine-straight minutes.

Biola boasted the edge in each individual quarter on the way to the 16-9 final. The team nabbed all four sprints and outdid the Leopards in shots (38-33) and steals (13-5).

Ava LoBue offered up an impressive performance with seven points. The senior cashed in on three goals to go along with four assists, two steals and two sprint victories. Gwendolyn Pidd also piled on the points with three goals and an assist, while capturing the other two sprints.

The leader in the scoring column for either team was Lizzy Birch, landing four tallies on Friday.

Alicia Fregoso logged the win in the cage, picking up 11 saves with three steals and one assist.

Biola moved to 1-5 on the season and will be back in the water next Friday, facing USC on the road at 5:00 pm.
