Esparza Continues Tear in Road Win

Daniel Esparza completed another 30-point offensive night, as the Eagles tackled Westmont.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Basketball captured its fourth-straight win on Wednesday night. The team logged a 89-82 win over Westmont (7-13, 5-7 PacWest) to move to 15-6 overall and 9-4 in the PacWest.

Daniel Esparza was the key cog on offense, picking up where he left off last week as the PacWest Player of the Week. On Wednesday, he dropped 30 points behind 11 field goals and four long balls.

An all-around effort came from Davian Brown. The graduate transfer did a little bit of everything for BU, recording 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Brown was excellent at drawing contact, drawing seven Westmont fouls and taking eight free throws, while making seven of those.

The first half of basketball was dominated by Esparza. The senior brought the offensive firepower with 17 points in the opening 20 minutes. He went 7-9 from the field with three treys and netted 12 points in a six-minute stretch.

Biola ended the half on a rally, stealing away the lead with a 10-2 run. Casey Cappo provided the exclamation point with a triple to beat the buzzer and put the Eagles ahead, 48-42.

The second half was all Biola, as the team never relinquished its lead. The lead hit its highest of the game at 12, as Esparza netted 11 points in the first seven minutes of the second half.

Over the next six minutes, Wesmont rallied to make a game of it. A 17-9 run put the host squad back within four with over seven minutes still remaining in the contest. Second chance points hurt the Eagles, as the Warriors landed eight points off offensive rebounds in the run.

BU responded and rebuilt its double-digit lead by getting to the charity stripe. Five different Eagles scored in a four-minute stretch to help put away the game.

Efficiency was big for Biola on Wednesday with a 58.2 field goal percentage and a 50.0 three-point field goal percentage to go along with a 85.0 free throw percentage.

Casey Cappo added to the attack with 17 points in the win.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, facing Azusa Pacific at 7:30 pm, adding to the festivities of Alumni Day.
