Shining Bright Under the Lights

Biola men’s basketball capped off Alumni Day with a bang, defeating Azusa Pacific in the Cornerstone Cup.

LA MIRADA --- A packed house was treated to a spectacular showing by the Biola Eagles on Saturday night. Alumni Day festivities littered a day of celebration with Biola basketball as the culmination of the campus-wide event. The Eagles (16-6, 10-4 PacWest) delivered in their Cornerstone Cup matchup against Azusa Pacific (11-11, 6-8 PacWest), beating their rivals, 76-68.

Biola extended its current winning streak to five games, while also nabbing its third-straight win over the Cougars.

"We've got a happy team," commented Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "Our team has really good spirit and it shows in how they practice and how they compete in the game. They are really supportive of each other."

A 33-28 first half lead was in big part an effort from Casey Cappo. The senior did it all in the opening 20 minutes. He led the way with 15 points on 6-7 shooting, while also grabbing five rebounds, dishing out two assists, and picking up one block.

The game kicked off with three triples from the BU squad for a 10-7 lead at the second media timeout. The three-point attempts kept coming but the efficiency slowed, as BU tried to break the APU zone. In the half, BU netted four triples on 18 tries.

Overall in the opening 20 minutes, Biola boasted one more field goal and three more free throws than their opponent to lead by five at the break. The Eagles led for over 15 minutes of the first half.

Biola made their move early in the second half to take firm control. After a layup from APU to kick off the second half, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run with four made shots on five possessions. APU was held scoreless for over three minutes of gametime, as BU took a 42-30 lead.

The Biola advantage teetered between six and 14 for the final 16 minutes of the game. The closest that the visitors would get was five with only 24 seconds on the clock.

Cappo provided the exclamation point, slamming home a dunk with four seconds left, sealing the 76-68 victory.

Cappo was great from start to finish, ending the night with a team-high 23 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. He also added to the defensive end with four huge blocks.

"Down the stretch we ran our sets, played good defense and credit to our veteran team," said Cappo after the win.

One of those veterans was Davian Brown, who piled on 21 points, 16 of which came in the second half. The graduate transfer was 6-10 from the field and 7-8 from the free throw line with two assists.

Erik Howlin and Daniel Esparza each reached double-digits in the scoring column as well. Howlin hit 17 points with eight free throws, converting at an 80.0 percent clip.

The Eagles will look to continue their winning ways on Thursday, hitting the road to face Menlo at 7:30 pm.
