Eagles Show Grit in Showdown

The Biola men’s water polo team lost in a tough first matchup against Cal Lutheran at the 2024 Air Force Rare Air Challenge.

Air Force Academy, Colorado --- The Biola Eagles (1-6) traveled to The Air Force Academy on Friday to compete in a six-match tournament. The Eagles began their tournament play with a tough 17-9 loss against the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen (1-3).

The Kingsmen started off with an early 3-0 lead before senior Gavin McKenzie found the back of the goal to put BU on the board with just under two minutes remaining in the first period.

Biola kept the momentum rolling into the second period as Adam Lavoy scored a goal early on in the second frame to cut the Eagles deficit to one (2-1). BU allowed a goal, putting the Kingsmen ahead 4-2 before six-foot, utility, Nolan Rapp lobbed the ball to the back of the net bringing BU right back into the game.

The Eagles closed out the second period scoring with two more goals but still trailed 8-5 going into the half.

The Kingsmen dominated the pool in the third period as they racked up a few more goals and held the Eagles scoreless with a 12-5 lead after three.

BU attempted a comeback in the fourth period, but for every Eagles goal, there was a Cal Lutheran goal to follow it. Kyle Seifen, Lavoy, Caleb Hernandez, and Rapp all found their way to the back of the net in the final frame.

Adam Lavoy stood out with his first collegiate hat trick in Friday afternoon's matchup. BU goalie, Mitchell Carpenter led Biola's defense with two steals and 12 saves.

The Eagles face Augustana on Saturday at 9:30 A.M. P.T. for their second match of the 2024 Air Force Rare Air Challenge.
