A MoMONTous Effort

Autum Monty shines bright in the biggest moments to carry Biola to a draw vs. ranked CSULA.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — On the night the Biola students in attendance benefited from some free Chick-fil-A, Biola's goalkeeper Autum Monty sizzled even hotter than those chicken sandwiches. The Eagles' junior keeper stepped in on, dove to stop and punched out eight CSU Los Angeles shots, including six in the second half to preserve a 1-1 draw.

"Today was a really big battle for us," stated Autum Monty. "Their passing is really high and we're in a new formation and we're coming off a game on Monday. So everyone was really tired, but everyone was super gritty and got in front of the balls, blocked shots and we all defended as a unit and that really helped us today."

"There's definitely a lot of action in the second half, but it wasn't just me back there it was everyone," continued Monty. "It was people clearing balls off the line, covering me, winning the headers and blocking shots. So it was a big team effort tonight."

The visiting Golden Eagles benefited from a bit of a fluky goal in the fifth minute when Reyna Roman tucked one into the net after a presumed offside play.

It did not take long for the Biola side to find an answer, despite being knocked on its heels quickly. A beautiful long ball in from JoJo Prisock began a series of passes which ultimately led to Briley Phelps' first goal of the 2024 campaign. The Prisock pass was redirected by Peyton Nelson and subsequently buried by Phelps from point blank range. This allowed BU to knot the match in the 27th minute.

After that, it was pretty much all CSULA in terms of offensive chances. It was a physical contest with quite a few injury stoppages and substitutions, but the Golden Eagles dominated the possession and continually used their speed to create opportunities. CSULA managed 20 shots while holding the Biola side to just four total shots.

Monty's performance, though, kept the goal column level and allowed her team to savor a solid draw from this effort. It's the third draw of the year for the ranked CSULA side, who moves to 2–0-3 on the season. The eight saves is a new season-best and ties Monty's top mark in any match since she's donned the Biola kit.

Phelps and Marije Rechin were the only Biolans to a take a shot in this effort, both directing a ball towards the goal twice in this matchup. Biola had a hard time getting balls out of the midfield, with a lot of lead passes to the wings going just out of reach of the Eagles' outside runner.

The rest of Biola's defensive line did enough to disrupt the dangerous CSULA offense. The team managed to successfully defend six Golden Eagles' corner kicks in this one, resulting in a ton of goal kicks.

Coach Brett Croft attempted to use the golden boot of Prisock once again in the game's fading seconds as he let the defender line up to boot the game's final goal kick to try to help the Eagles' attackers find a seam. It was to no avail, though, as the game came to a rest with the ball bouncing around the midfield.

The draw is a positive result for BU and helps improve the non-conference record to 0-2-2 this season. The final non-conference home match is due up this Saturday September 21. Biola hosts CSU San Marcos (2-1-1) at 7 p.m.
