Eagles Secure First Win of the Season

The men’s soccer team shut out the Orediggers in the first match of their Colorado road trip to put the Eagles in the win column.

Golden, Colo. --- The Biola men's soccer team headed to Colorado searching for their first win of the season and accomplished their mission with a 3-0 victory over Colorado School of Mines.

"That one felt good," head coach Joey O'Keefe. "Grinding out this first win on the road with the various elements stacked against us, I couldn't be more proud of the group."

O'Keefe continued, "That first half was ugly, no other way to put it. But complete credit to the group that found a way to score one goal and then turn on the pressure to knock in two more. Our defensive line was outstanding today - Gijs, Tomo, Adrian and Eoin. They needed this shut out just as much as the team needed a win." The team will celebrate this win tonight together, but we're not done yet. Tomorrow it's back to business and preparation begins for the Saturday match."

The Eagles (1-2) and Orediggers (0-3) played a scoreless first half, but Biola would quickly break the stalemate in the second.

Caleb Castaño got the goal scoring started in the 59th minute. Castaño received a good ball from Jeremy Larson to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.

Shortly after, Brennan Furlan was subbed in and immediately got to work. Furlan assisted Ethan Hardin's goal in the 63rd minute, 18 seconds after he entered the game.

BU wasn't done yet. Freshmen Ryan Ellsworth and Cruz Navarro partnered up for the Eagles' third goal in their 3-0 shutout.

Biola's keeper, Gijs van Shouten, made two saves against the Orediggers and recorded his first shutout of the season.

The Eagles will rest and prepare to play at Regis on Saturday, September 14 at 12 P.M. PT before heading back home.
