May 29, 2024

LA MIRADA --- The 2024 ACWPC Division II All-America Awards were announced on Wednesday, naming multiple Eagles to the prestigious list. Maria Roldan Gonzalez and Sarah Orozco picked up individual awards, as the player and coach of the year, respectively.

The Biola Women's Water Polo squad cemented themselves as the top team in all of NCAA Division II with a WWPA Championship in April. The Eagles eked out their second-consecutive conference crown, along with another trip to the National Collegiate Water Polo Championships.

BU was the lone DII representative on the national stage. The team battled Wagner College in the opening round and came up just short of advancing in the tournament.

Maria Roldan Gonzalez paved the way with an ACWPC DII Player of the Year honor and a ACWPC First Team All-American selection. The senior was dominant down the stretch and even was named the WWPA Tournament MVP. Prior to the tournament, Roldan Gonzalez was named Second Team All-WWPA.

The senior went to work to finish 2024, posting at least three goals in the final five games. In the final stretch, Roldan Gonzalez averaged 4.0 goals, 1.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Throughout the 2024 campaign, she totaled 60 goals, 28 assists and 54 steals.

Head Coach of the third-year Biola Women's Water Polo program continued her success with the young team. Sarah Orozco picked up her second ACWPC DII Coach of the Year honor on Wednesday, following another historic season for the Eagles. Just within the three years at the helm, Orozco has led BU to two conference titles and two trips to the national tournament, while also reaching No. 23 in the CWPA National Poll.

Veralie Naranjo joined the prestigious list as a First Team ACWPC All-American. The junior capped off 2024 with a team-high of 78 goals and 97 points. Naranjo notched 20-straight games with at least one goal which went through the end of the season.

The WWPA crowned Naranjo the conference player of the year, following the conclusion of the regular season. She was also named to the First Team All-WWPA, thanks to her 78 goals, 19 assists, 77 drawn exclusions, 14 steals and five field blocks.

Alicia Fregoso added her name to the list with a ACWPC All-American Honorable Mention. The BU goalkeeper was tabbed with seven wins on the year to go along with 133 saves. She saved her best for last, totaling at least 10 saves in the final three games of the year, including her career-best of 15 saves in a single game in the WWPA Semifinals.
