Biola Scores First, CUI Scores More

The Biola softball team scored first but nationally-ranked No. 17 CUI would score more in the Eagles’ 9-5 loss in the opening round of the 2024 PacWest Championships at Penguin Field.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.---The Biola softball team scored first but nationally-ranked No. 17 CUI would score more in the Eagles' 9-5 loss in the opening round of the 2024 PacWest Championships at Penguin Field.

Biola scored three runs in the top of the first. Kennadie Tsue and Alexa Medley recorded back-to-back singles to give BU runners on first and second. Abie Nowak then loaded the bases, reaching first off an error made on an intended sacrifice bunt.

One out would pass and then Brie Nowak hit a sacrifice fly to deep left to score Biola's first run (1-0). Mikala Huskey kept the scoring going, tripling to right center to score the Eagles' final two runs (3-0).

A great Biola start was met with a greater start by Concordia who scored five runs in the bottom of the first and then another run in the second (6-3).

Biola chipped away at CUI's lead with a single run in the third inning. Huskey doubled down the right field line, scoring BU's fourth run of the game (6-4).

CUI came back again, this time scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth inning while keeping Biola scoreless (8-4).

The Eagles broke through in the top of the sixth, scoring another single run. Cami Lara produced a lead-off single through the ⅚ hole and then Kaitlyn Hawkins continued the momentum with a single to third. 

Jackie Ibarra hit a fielder's choice that advanced Hailey Paull (pinch running for Lara) to third. Kennadie Tsue walked to load the bases and Paull scored in the next at-bat off a wild pitch (8-5).

However, CUI kept their four-run lead intact, scoring another solo run in the bottom of the sixth (9-5).

Jackie Ibarra and Hawkins led the Eagles' offense, going 2-for-3. Huskey batted .500 against the Golden Eagles.

Raylene Roybal got the start for Biola in the circle and Bousquette would come into relief in the first and throw 3.2 innings of work. DJ Symons closed the game, throwing the final two innings. CUI got 13 hits against BU's pitching staff which included three home runs.

Biola will play the loser of Azusa Pacific and Hawaii Hilo game tomorrow Thursday, May 2 at 1 p.m.
