Leaving it All on the Field

The Biola softball team gave it their all against Hawaii Hilo but would lose 8-5 to the Vulcans in the 11th inning of the 2024 PacWest Championships elimination game.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.---The Biola softball team gave it their all against Hawaii Hilo but would lose 8-5 to the Vulcans in the 11th inning of the 2024 PacWest Championships elimination game.

The Eagles (19-27 overall) put up an incredible fight against the Vulcans (26-16), showing their heart and resiliency until the very end.

Biola scored the first runs of the game in the second inning. Three Eagle hits would allow BU to take a 2-0 lead. Brie Nowak and Mikala Huskey recorded back-to-back singles and Kaitlyn Hawkins sent them home with her double down the left field line.

However, UHH would tie up the game in the third by scoring two runs off of four hits (2-2).

Four scoreless innings sent the teams into extra innings. BU and UHH went toe-to-toe in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings. Hawaii Hilo scored two runs in the top of the eighth and Biola would answer with two in the bottom. Then the Vulcans scored one more in the ninth and the Eagles matched their run to keep the game going.

Both teams were held scoreless in the 10th, but the Vulcans would have the last say in the 11th where they scored three runs to pull ahead 8-5.

In the eighth, Brie got the inning going with a lead-off double and Huskey singled to give BU runners on first and third. Cami Lara had a good piece of situational hitting, moving Huskey to second off a fielder's choice. With runners in scoring position, Hawkins smacked a hard-hit ball to second which was fumbled by UHH's second baseman and scored Bridgette Trujillo (pinch running for Brie) and Huskey (4-4).

In the ninth, Raylene Roybal clutched up with solo homer over the right-center field fence to tie up the game (5-5).

The Eagles' downfall in the extra innings ended up being the six runners they left on base. BU stranded three runners on base in the eighth, two in the 10th and one in the 11th inning.

Biola's pitching staff included starter Raylene Roybal, reliever Kayla Bousquette and closer DJ Symons. All three had shining moments in the battle against UHH. Roybal held UHH to two runs in four innings of work. Bousquette relieved in the fifth inning and showed up big. With bases loaded, Bousquette held her composure and rang up three back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the dangerous inning.

Symons threw the final 2.2 innings. She relieved Bousquette in the ninth and got the final two outs of the inning to send Biola back on offense.
