Eagles Cannot Hang On in Game One

The Biola softball team was hoping for another win against the Penguins but fell short as Dominican opened it up late in the game.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- After completing the doubleheader sweep on Friday, the Biola softball team (12-19, 7-11 PacWest) fell to Dominican (18-18, 11-10 PacWest) by a final score of 9-3 in game one of the Saturday doubleheader. The Eagles kept the game within reach but a late Dominican grand slam put the ball game in favor of the Penguins.

The Eagles did not waste any time, bringing in a run in the first inning. Kennadie Tsue and Alexa Medley got on base to lead off the inning, putting the Eagles in a good position to score early. Thanks to a sacrifice fly from the first baseman, Abie Nowak, BU scored the first run of the day. (1-0)

The Penguins answered back with a run in the bottom of the first and continued to build up a five-run lead (5-1). Dominican scored runs in the second and fourth innings while holding the Eagles scoreless until the fifth.

In the top of the fifth inning, BU loaded the bases, setting up the perfect scenario for Cami Lara to enter as a pinch hitter. Lara singled to second base, reeling in two more runs for the Eagles, making it a 5-3 ball game.

The Penguins would come back stronger in the sixth, opening up the inning with a grand slam which gave Dominican a comfortable 9-3 lead.

Unfortunately, BU could not find the late spark that they needed and would ultimately lose 9-3 in their first game of the day.

The Nowak twins recorded two of the Eagles' three doubles as Abie went 1-for-2 at the plate and Brie went 2-for-3. Tsue went 1-for-3 with the third BU double.

The Eagles will close out the four-game road series against Dominican around 2:30 pm.
