BU Upsets #17 CUI on Senior Day

The Biola softball team had an electric first game against nationally-ranked No. 17 Concordia University Irvine, run-ruling the Golden Eagles 11-1 in five innings.

LA MIRADA—The Biola softball team had an electric first game against nationally-ranked No. 17 Concordia University Irvine, run-ruling the Golden Eagles 11-1 in five innings. 

Biola celebrated seven seniors before the game and delivered with a game to remember. All seven Eagles have been a part of the Biola softball program for at least four years. Abie Nowak, Brie Nowak, Maddie Riley, Allie Beck, Kylee Messmer and Raylene Roybal (fifth-year) were honored before the game.

Biola's bats were hot as they scored 11 runs from the first, second and third innings.

Biola began with three runs in the first inning. The Eagles stringed together six hits to take an early lead. Alexa Medley, Abie Nowak, Roybal, Brie Nowak, Messmer and Hawkins produced hits.

Roybal, Brie Nowak and Messmer had RBIs in the first.

Biola pushed across two more runs in the second inning. Abie Nowak had a two-out single down the left field line to keep the inning alive and then Roybal homered to bring BU's lead to 5-0. Roybal leads the Eagles' with six home runs.

The Eagles weren't done yet and scored six more runs in the third inning. Five Eagle hits allowed them to stack up 11 runs. Mikayla Huskey, Messmer, Jackie Ibarra, Medley and Brie Nowak contributed hits.

Ibarra, Kennadie Tsue and Brie Nowak had RBIs in the third inning.

Roybal pitched a phenomenal game against the Golden Eagles. In five innings the redshirt-senior allowed only five hits and one run (in the second inning) while striking out four batters.

In the fifth inning, Roybal struck out the first and third batters to solidify BIola's 11-1 victory.

Abie Nowak and Roybal led BU's offense, batting 2-for-2. Three Eagles were 2-for-3 including Medley, Brie Nowak and Messmer. Huskey also batted .500 (1-for-2).
