Championships Clinched!

Biola clinched a spot in the 2023-24 PacWest Championships with their 57-46 victory over Dominican.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team dug deep to pull out a 57-46 victory over Dominican at the Conlan Center.

"This was a well-earned win for us," commented head coach Alan Nakamura. "We were really unified and determined to compete against a talented, high-energy, well-coached Dominican team. I'm thankful for the godly character our team shows on a daily basis!"

The Eagles (15-13, 11-9 PacWest) needed to win against the Penguins (19-9, 12-8) to advance to the 2023-24 PacWest Championships and the women were able to get the job done on the road.

When sixth-year senior Abigail Laberge was asked about their win she exclaimed, "I'm really happy. The job was to win and qualify for the tournament and we did that."

Laila Walker posted a season-high of 20 points against the Penguins to help lead Biola to victory. Walker went 7-for-10 from the field and downed four three-pointers. Jordan Rabe scored the second-most points, contributing 10 and Jessa Thurman dropped eight.

"From the moment we stepped onto the court we knew we had to play desperate the whole game and that's exactly what we did," reflected Rabe. "It was a little scary and I was a little anxious going into this one but my teammates were there the whole time encouraging and cheering me on. We really stuck through it."

Biola was chasing Dominican 16-15 after the first quarter but bounced back with a huge second quarter where they put up 19 points while holding the Penguins to four. Walker led her team in scoring with seven points, Kaylen Kamelamela and Jessa Thurman scored five and Rabe had two points.

By the end of the second, Biola built up a 14-point lead (34-20). The Eagles stretched their advantage to 16 points (36-20) in the third quarter but the Penguins would begin to heat up and trim down BU's advantage to 10 points going into the fourth (46-36).

Biola dug deep in the final frame to out-score Dominican 11-10. The Eagles stretched their lead to as much as 18 points in the final frame and the Penguins would trim it down to as low as eight points by the last minute of the quarter.

The Eagles held their composure and Rabe landed the last basket of the game to solidify their 57-46 victory.

Nakamura concluded, "I am very thankful that our players get to experience the PacWest Conference Tournament. Joe Reinsch and his staff do a great job making the tournament a special experience for all."

The PacWest Championships begin Thursday, Mar. 7 at the Golden Gymnasium in San Diego.
