Stunned in the Sixth

The softball team was stunned by Hawaii Hilo who pulled ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning.

LA MIRADA—The Biola softball team was stunned by Hawaii Hilo who pulled ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning.

Biola scored first, tallying a run in the second inning. Makayla Jordan began the inning with a lead-off double and then Kaitlyn Hawkins and Brie Nowak recorded back-to-back singles. Nowak scored Jordan with her single to right field.

Neither team scored for the next three innings. Hawaii Hilo broke the silence in the sixth inning, taking the lead by scoring two runs off of three hits and one hit batter.

The Eagles were then held by the Vulcans defense for the last two innings. Biola had some momentum going their way in the bottom of the seventh but would be once again held off by Hawaii Hilo. Alexa Medley and Kennadie Tsue singled in the Eagles' seventh-inning comeback attempt.

Kayla Bousquette threw 5.1 innings, allowing the Vulcans seven hits and two earned runs.

Raylene Roybal came in to relieve in the sixth inning where she worked Biola out of a tricky inning. The bases were loaded with one out and Roybal quickly secured the second out off a fly ball in foul territory. Unfortunately, UHH's runner on third was able to tag up on the flyout which gave them the 2-1 advantage. Roybal walked the next batter but threw a ground out to end the inning.

Roybal closed out the seventh inning strong. She allowed one base hit and then got the next three outs. The final out of the inning was a strikeout looking.

Biola plays next on Thursday, Mar. 21 at 3 p.m. against Cal State Monterey Bay.
