Leon Slam Nearly Does It

Biola was bolstered by a Leon grand slam but still fell to Azusa Pacific by one run.

March 16, 2024

Box Score AZUSA, Calif. --- The third game of the series between Biola and Azusa Pacific featured another epic nail-biter. Isaiah Leon was almost the hero, blasting a grand slam in the eighth to give Biola its first lead of the day. APU responded in the next half inning to defeat the Eagles, 8-7.

Biola's road series at APU continued on Saturday, as the Eagles looked to bounce back from an 0-2 day one.

Game one of Saturday's doubleheader began in the favor of APU. The host squad picked up four runs in the first three frames to take the momentum.

Biola began chipping away in the fifth inning with strong at bats. Leon opened up the frame with a single and moved to third off a Noah Ruiz double. Jonathan Smith logged the RBI with a single up the middle.

In the sixth, BU found success with two outs, stringing together three-straight hits for two runs. A James Whitman single followed by doubles from Sam Lisiak and Isaiah Leon brought the BU deficit to 4-3.

A homer from APU brought the Cougar lead back up to two going into the eighth inning.

In the Eagles next at bat, patience was the name of the game with the team down by two. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Biola without having to swing the bat. Next up was the hot-hitting Leon. On the first pitch, Leon swung and launched the ball over the fence in left-center.

The grand slam flipped the script and put Biola ahead for the first time at 7-5. It was the first home run of the season for the graduate-transfer, Leon.

The good feelings did not last long, as APU returned to the offense. The Cougars rallied in the bottom of the eighth and retook the lead with three runs at 8-7. BU went three-up, three-down in the ninth and the game was over with that scoreline.

Leon has been stellar so far in the series against APU, going 6-11 with two doubles, a home run, and six RBI.
