Roybal Leads Biola to Success

Raylene Roybal led the Biola softball team to success in their 9-7 victory over the Cal State San Bernardino at Freedom Field.

LA MIRADA---Raylene Roybal led the Biola softball team to success in their 9-7 victory over the Cal State San Bernardino at Freedom Field.

Roybal was a dual-threat against the Yotes. Offensively, the redshirt senior scored five RBIs and had two clutch hits. Her first at-bat was a three-run homer that tied up the game in the bottom of the first (3-3). Roybal's second hit was a deep double that cushioned the Eagles' lead 9-7 in the fourth inning.

Defensively, Roybal pitched the last inning and successfully held off Cal State San Bernardino's seventh-inning comeback attempt. Roybal entered the seventh inning with no outs, runner on first and with the game-winning run on deck.

CSUSB's next batter got on base which brought the game-winning run up to bat. Roybal held her composure and fought to get the next three batters out. Her first out was a batter who struck out looking and the last two popped up. Roybal also recorded her first save of the season.

Alexa Medley led the Eagles' offensive effort with three hits (3-for-4). Medley, Jackie Ibarra and Abie Nowak all had an RBI in Biola's 9-7 win.

DJ Symons got the start for Biola in the circle. Symons threw .2 innings and was replaced by Kayla Bousquette who came in to relieve. Bousquette threw 5.1 innings of work and allowed the Yotes four earned runs off of seven hits.

Next up for Biola is nationally-ranked No. 8 Cal State San Marcos on Friday, Mar. 15 at 12 and 2 p.m. at the CSUSM Softball Field.
