Biola Captures Cornerstone Cup

The Eagles earned a season sweep of Azusa Pacific with an electric win at Chase Gymnasium.

LA MIRADA --- The newest episode of Biola men's basketball (15-10, 10-7 PacWest) versus Azusa Pacific (9-15, 8-9 PacWest) was a thriller down to the final seconds. A sold out Chase Gym was rocking as the Eagles claimed the 70-66 win over the visiting Cougars.

"This group is full of great competitors," said Head Coach Dave Holmquist. "You can feel the added pressure and desire to win in these big games."

The anticipation and excitement seemed to stifle the Biola offense at the tipoff. The Eagles went scoreless for nearly the first seven minutes of the game and did not have a made field goal until the 11:37 mark. Biola was quickly down by double digits but found ways to claw back.

Nathan Medina and Tyus Parrish-Tillman kept the Eagles within reach in the early going, combining for the team's first 15 points of the game.

"Coach (Holmquist) has done a great job believing in us and our captains Myja, Casey, and Daniel have done a great job leading us," commented Medina after the game.

Biola roared back in the final four minutes of the first half, completely erasing its 11-point deficit. Five different Eagles found the bottom of the net en-route to a 13-0 run and a 31-29 halftime lead.

The break did not hinder the BU momentum, as the team put together a 13-3 run to start the second half. An overall 26-3 run over an eight-minute stretch flipped a 29-18 deficit to a 44-32 advantage for Biola.

APU continued to fight and drew within one possession of BU multiple times as the game progressed. The Eagles did well though to keep the visitors at arms length and never gave up their lead in the pressure moments late in the ball game.

Medina paced the squad on Saturday with 20 points in the win. The guard went 8-for-15 from the field with a pair of triples.

"It was great to be back home and play in front of the fans," added Medina. "It's special; this is such a cool rivalry."

Parrish-Tillman went to work down low and offered 16 points off the bench. The big man did well at the free throw line, hitting four-of-five attempts. Parrish-Tillman led the charge near the hoop, as the Eagles picked up 38 points in the paint, outpacing their opponents by 18.

Biola will be back in action for senior night next Saturday against Hawaii Pacific at 7:30 pm.
