Brown’s Arm Propels Eagles to Win over #10 Yotes

Biola took down a top-10 opponent on Friday, behind the pitching of Bobby Brown.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- A strong start to 2024 continued for the Biola baseball squad, as the team was victorious on Friday afternoon. The Eagles (5-2) took down the 10th-ranked CSU San Bernardino Yotes (5-3) by a margin of 4-2.

The road game on Friday kicked off a three-game series against the Yotes, which will see a home doubleheader on Saturday.

"Great team win today," said Head Coach Jesse Rodgers. "Bobby was lights out and Gabe showed a ton of courage to weather the storm and close it out."

Pitching was key for the Eagles, as Bobby Brown delivered in his third start of the season. The junior offered five three-up, three-down innings on his way to seven scoreless frames.

Brown saw only three runners move into scoring position but worked his way out every time. In the afternoon, Brown fanned three batters through 100 total pitches.

In the meantime, the BU offense picked up timely hits to get on the board. Gavin Ayers cashed in in the first, grabbing an RBI double for an early BU lead. Jame Whitman logged a second two-out RBI in the third, bringing in Austin Carillo with a single. One more time, the Eagles found success with two outs, this time in the sixth, as Taylor Justus scored Whitman with a single for a 3-0 Biola lead.

Gabe Magallan got the ball next on the mound with the job of securing the win. The righty ousted the first two batters of the eighth but faced a two-run homer before the third out of the inning. The jump from the Yotes brought the game within reach at 3-2.

In the top of the ninth, Noah Ruiz gave the Eagles some breathing room by himself. The sophomore put the ball over the fence for a solo homer, pushing the BU lead up to 4-2.

The bottom of the ninth began with turmoil, as the Yotes put runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt put the tying run at second base but Magallan stayed strong. The sophomore battled around a 3-1 count and struck out the next batter, before forcing a ground out to finish out the 4-2 victory for Biola, while earning the save.

Wyatt Duncan played an important role in the field, securing picks over at first base to grab important outs.

Biola will host a doubleheader against No. 10 CSU San Bernardino on Saturday beginning at 11:00 am at Eagles Diamond.
