Last Minute Push Falls Short

Biola attempted a worthy comeback but came up short at Concordia.

IRVINE, Calif. --- For the second time this season, Biola (8-20, 1-2 WWPA) and Concordia (11-16, 3-0 WWPA) took to the pool in a high stakes WWPA matchup. This time in Irvine, the Golden Eagles got the edge and held on to a 7-5 lead, despite a feverish Biola comeback fight.

Defense was the name of the game Friday night. Neither team could get much going on the attack with no goals for either team in the first quarter and only five total by halftime.

Mitchell Carpenter put in a mighty effort in the cage, blocking shots throughout the evening match. The reigning WWPA Defender of the Week added to his resume with 15 saves on Friday.

CUI struck first, taking a 4-1 lead in the second quarter. The hosting Golden Eagles netted the first goal of the second half, going up by four early in the third. John Grasso scored the next two goals, to bring the Eagles back within range at 5-3 with six minutes to go in the fourth.

Concordia responded a minute later, scoring in back-to-back possessions to regain firm control.

Biola was not done though, as Adam LaVoy and Christian Trapp found the back of the net in the final two minutes. Two quick scores gave the Eagles hope but the final minute ticked by with the scoreline remaining at 7-5 for CUI.

Carpenter offered his 11th game with double-digit blocks with the 15 saves.

Nolan Rapp helped instigate the offense with a pair of assists.

The Eagles will wrap up their season next week with home games against Fresno Pacific on Friday at 7:30 pm and UC Merced on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
