Biola Outlasted by Regis

The Biola women's basketball team was outlasted by Regis University in their 59-53 loss at Chase Gymnasium.

LA MIRADA---The Biola women's basketball team was outlasted by Regis University in their 59-53 loss at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles opened with a strong first quarter where they out-scored the Rangers 14-12. Laila Walker led the scoring effort with six points from two three-pointers. Sammie Hennley scored three points, Jessa Thurman and Kaylen Kamelamela scored two and Camden Miller contributed one point.

The Rangers bounced back in the second quarter where they tied the game up 29-29. The entire frame was tightly-contested; Regis took the biggest lead of the game at 24-20. Biola quickly answered with a five-point run that gave them a 25-24 lead with 3:36 on the game clock. Thurman got the run going with two good free throws and Henley stretched it to five with a basket beyond the arc.

Regis answered in the next possession, gaining a one-point advantage that Biola countered to take the lead back. Miller sank in a three-point shot to put BU ahead 27-26.

FIve possessions would pass and then Kamelamela stretched Biola's lead to 29-26. However, the Rangers had the last say as they sank in the game-tying basket with 59 seconds remaining (29-29).

Biola came back from the halftime break strong and built up as much as a five-point lead before the Rangers retaliated with an 11-point run which gave them a lead of seven points (45-38). The Eagles closed the third quarter with the final basket, cutting their disadvantage to five points. 

Biola fought to win the first basket of the fourth quarter. Walker made a layup which cut down Regis' lead to three (45-42). However, the Rangers would respond with a five-point run that distanced them by eight points (50-42).

Biola tried to counter but would be held at arms distance by the Rangers who ended up winning by six (59-53).

Henley had a strong performance against the Rangers with 18 points, two assists, three steals and three rebounds. Walker also shined with 13 points, six assists, two steals and two rebounds. Thurman led Biola on the boards with 10 rebounds. She also had a block and scored eight points.

Next up for Biola is the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Central Washington. Biola's first game is on Friday, November 29th at 12 p.m. against Western Washington.
